Building a compost – Constructing a compost bin can be as simple as using old wooden pallets, either as a single bin or multiples of 3.  The latter is better because one bin will have compost material in it, the second decomposing compost, and the third recently collected organic matter. One can also empty and turn material from one bin to another thereby introducing oxygen to speed up decomposition.

The size of each bin should be approximately 1m³ and the front section removable.  Removable slats can be achieved by nailing two pieces of batten to each front corner post with a 2cm gap for the slats to slide.  This enables easy access for removing the compost when ready.

Simple Composting – Locate the bin according to drainage, shade and distance.  Place it on bare soil rather than conrete.  Place within easy reach of the house.  Fill it gradually with:

> Kitchen waste > Egg shells
> Paper materials > Fine woody materials
> Garden waste > Manures etc.

Add material to the bin in small loose layers and keep the heap covered with a piece of old carpet or a compost duvet for retaining the heat. Keep it moist by watering occasionally..

Don’t compost: meats, bones, fish, glass, plastics, metal, nappies or pet excrement.

A compost heap may take up to 2 weeks to reach its maximum temperature.  Some pernicious weeds may need separate sunning in a plastic bag for several weeks before composting.
